Prescription diet pills are like drugs hence they are also called as weight loss drugs. Prescription diet pills are specifically designed for the treatment of obesity, rather than the 'cosmetic' weight loss. They require approval by FDA and are closely regulated. These pills have to undergo a range of clinical tests to prove their effectiveness for weight reduction. They are also tested closely for side effects and health risks. Typical examples of such weight loss pills are Meridia (Sibutramine), Phentermine/ Fentermine, and Xenical (Orlistat).

Non-Prescription Diet Pills

Non prescription diet pills are also referred to as weight loss supplements. They are subjected to only minimal FDA regulation. Non-prescription weight loss pills can be purchased directly over-the-counter. The examples include herbal weight loss pills, fat-burners, stackers and other diet or sports supplements. Certain types of Non-prescription pills nowadays are just as powerful/dangerous as prescription pills. The only difference between the two pills that have been left is that these weight loss supplements are NOT regulated in the same way as weight loss drugs. Recently, the FDA has issued warnings about weight loss supplements containing a chemical named ephedra, which is very dangerous. So several manufacturers are now removing ephedra from their weight loss products and labeling them as "ephedra-free."

Do keep in mind one thing that whatever type of weight loss pills you want to buy – either prescription based, or diet supplements - you should first consult your doctor for a full explanation of the dangers and side effects of weight loss pills. Another point is that these weight loss diet pills are only effective when combined with a healthy diet and exercise plan.
